With redundant instrumentals and forgettable vocal melodies, much of the new Panda Bear record is too drab for words.

Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Panda Bear (Noah Lennox). It was released on January 9, 2015 by the Domino Recording Company. Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper was preceded by the digital release of an extended play, Mr Noah, and two singles, "Mr Noah" and "Boys Latin". It was followed by the extended play Crosswords.

Panda Bear-over the past decade, both without and within Animal Collective. Lifting its main-event billing from old King Tubby records, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper serves a similar function for its creator as Slasher Flicks did for Avey Tare-it’s a playful, fantastical response to some serious life changes. In Portner’s case, it was divorce and strep throat; for Lennox, it’s the entry into middle age and the substantial familial responsibilities that go with it.

Noah Lennox’s latest album may not sound quite as weird or radical as some of his previous ones, but it’s still full of irresistibly lovely sounds, writes Alexis Petridis. He’s talked proudly in interviews about Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper hitting the psychedelic sweet spot and he’s got a point. Alexis Petridis's album of the week.

Panda Bear released a mixtape called PB vs. GR on September 11, 2014. That day also saw the release of the album's first single, "Mr Noah", and a music video directed by AB/CD/CD. A teaser video for the album, directed by Danny Perez, was released on October 29. The second single, "Boys Latin", was released on December 15, and was accompanied by a music video directed by Isaiah Saxon and Sean.

The first great album of 2015? That’s easy. Panda Bear's Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper is as otherworldly as its title, as colorful as its cover art and as gleefully psychedelic as anything befitting of the Noah Lennox name. But there is a mournful edge, and beneath the reggae-inspired drum breaks and glimmery, washed out synths lie some of the most conventionally beautiful music the Animal Collective member has ever composed

Whereas 2011's Tomboy sought to clear up some of Person Pitch's alluring sonic murk, Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper is an audaciously maximalist assault on the senses.

Panda Bear’s never been particularly interested in drawing out precise, detail-rich narratives, but he’s clearly tying things together here, from the album title through multiple interlocking tracks, which makes the barely there connections a little distracting. This separation between lyrical content and sound hampers a few tracks, but also accentuates others. Plus, there can’t really be a lot of catharsis - Lennox is meeting the Grim Reaper, after all, not fighting him. One would think, though, that even meeting the Grim Reaper would mean a little more darkness in the formula, resulting in either messier questions or more explosive answers. Instead, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper rides high on his proven strengths, but doesn’t exactly explore new territory. Essential Tracks: Tropic of Cancer, Mr. Noah, and Boys Latin.

SUBJECT: Good album, Bad pressing, Avoid "dosprompt" seller on DiscogsLuv this PB record. But, thumbs waaaaay down for Domino’s choice for pressing plant, United Record Pressing is the worst major in the US. I went through 2 copies, both off centered and wobbly sounding, the 2nd cp had the nazzty non fill ripping sound on 2 tracks. Maybee the non limited edition version pressed in the UK is better?Oh one more thing, “dosprompt” in the US is listed as a seller of this version.AVOID “dosprompt”.This guy’s a jerk according to my vinyl hobby bro who once asked him a simple, polite question about payment choices. Dude didn’t answer his question, basically shrugged him off, my way or the highway. C’mon. Wha happened to the supposed spirit of the vinyl community here? Fuck off “dickprompt”. Again, AVOID this seller.

1. It could very well be your URP pressing is flawless and my URP pressing is not. Doesn't mean either of our reviews is inaccurate. I have many LPs made by this very factory that are both. Some dead quiet, some with "zap" sounding non-fill, some with pitch wavering due to off centered pressing. There's room enough for both realities.2. My comment is not only not slander, it is to help anybody on Discogs who might buy from this "dosprompt" seller. Look at the scores of reviews Discoggers leave for sellers, detailing their very good AND very bad experiences. They're not slandering, to my knowledge. They comment for the benefit of their buying peers here. Social media is entertainment, whereas my comment is more like Yelp user content (although I must admit that I don't quite like the bottomless barrage of first world complaining on that sight). So Twitter, et al. seem inappropriate (I don't participate in social media, anyway, and I wouldn't want to patronize the likes of Twitter, Instagram ...) My comment was a straight-up warning to unknowing Discogs users who might expect this site to be a friendly community of archivers, collectors, buyers and sellers. My own experience with a few sellers here, fortunately, the exception and not the rule, is that some sellers are not the most helpful or patient when asking something as simple as confirming Matrix Information, payment choices or specific issue. Some respond like they just can't be bothered by questions - buy or don't buy, but don't waste my time. These aren't unreasonable inquiries. Sellers who respond standoffishly or impatiently to enquirers ought to called out, for the benefit of all Discoggers. I don't think that's unreasonable. Is it naive to expect EVERY SINGLE user, buyer and especially seller, on here to be welcoming and patient with users' inquiries? Am I an out of touch utopianist? If I want impatience, I can get that easily from the underpaid employees at my local record stores. I thought Discogs was different.

Great packaging, great-sounding record, a United pressing that doesn't suck. But one thing that bothers me is the pixelized, low-res illustration in the second sleeve. The first one is actually fine. The standard edition also has this issue.

My copy is labeled as 180gm and the LP's definitely feel like 180gm. (But this is the USA version)

I think it's just the bonus EP "Mr Noah" which is 180g. The weight of the actual album is not specified, so it could be 150g.From the Bleep.com listing:2xLP of the albumPlus ‘Mr Noah’ EP on 180g heavyweight vinylDoesn't mentioned the album weight, just "Mr Noah"So I'm pretty sure there is just the one pressing for the LTD/EP bonus edition.
Xtintisha
Both the album and the EP are 180 gram for me, I have the US version though.

So. I wrote domino a mail. So we will know it soon.

Interesting. Just double checked my deluxe edition and the sticker definitely says 150g. I guess there must be two deluxe editions.
Gavinranara
I believe that only Mr Noah is 180 gram, and the album is on 150
Opithris
I have the deluxe edition (2LP + 1EP) and the sticker on the cover says it is 150g vinyl, not 180g. Are there 2 deluxe editions?
Hulbine
My deluxe edition is definitely labeled 180g
Hanelynai
My copy is labeled as 150g vinyl. Is there a 180g pressing or is it really 150g?
Xal
You mean the deluxe edition, which is labeled as 180g.?
