Tuesday, June 12, 2018 - 17:20. Allow me to reminisce for a moment, as this track was on my very first DJ mix from 20 years ago. Now repackaged with new remixes, this big beat slammer also features a classic reworking from Sol Brothers, for those who remember. The new remixes are pleasant enough in a chunky space funk stylee: I particularly like Dirty Barry's wigged out, acid-fuelled high roller, while Jem Stone's stompy disco effort also does the business. But it's the original, with its synthy, minimal breakbeat. Blowing Up The Spot (Ancient Astronauts Remix)'. Seize the Time (Sol Brothers Electric Boogie Remix)'. Ravers EP. Jayl Funk. Midfield General feat Linda Lewis. Reach Out (Crooked Man Remix 1).

NotesBack after exactly 20 years ago when this legendary track slammed straight in at the number one spot in the surprisingly eclectic DJ Mag “Big Beats” Chart, catapulting Fuselage right over the heads of DJ Shadow, Air, David Holmes, Coldcut and all the other beat-making pioneers of the day. It was 1998 and a joyous era for breaks: an open-armed community embracing everything from Fatboy to Tipper, Bronx Dogs to All Seeing I, and Seize the Time, a seriously heavy groove replete with wicked random samples over a rattling, chunky beat, epitomised that period’s creative looseness and freedom.
Part of that original package was the Sol Brothers Remix, one half of whom was breakbeat kingpin of the era, Aston “Freestylers” Harvey (a duo already famous for “That Elvis Track”) with a version that took in shuffling breaks and meaty electro with some major body-popping thrown in! It was a piece of vinyl that became a permanent fixture in almost every breaks DJ’s box, which makes it a wonder it has not been digitally available until now.
One record box this slab of wax never left was that of Finger Lickin’ Records co-founder Jem Panufnik, whose new imprint, Bona Fido, aims to bring back that magical creative attitude, giving this golden oldie a perfect springboard in this much more relaxed and open musical climate.
Now digitally remastered and accompanied by two slamming new mixes: Jem Stone kicking it into the disco-funk arena with a dancefloor bomb that nods towards that same era’s superb US and French house scene, and Dirty Barry, aka Robin12Tree of Finger Lickin’ Records mainstay Slyde, turning out a chunky breaks beast that harks back to that genre’s golden age (with a few other references thrown in!).
