Voice In Time - Ozone Hole album
Back in the 1980's we were warned that the CFC's (gas) used in our air conditioning and spray cans was eating a hole in the Ozone layer
Ozone depletion: Ozone depletion, gradual thinning of Earth’s ozone layer caused by the release of chemical compounds containing gaseous chlorine or bromine from industry and other human activities. The thinning is most pronounced in the polar regions, especially over Antarctica.
This depleted region is known as the ozone hole. The area of the ozone hole is determined from a map of total column ozone. It is calculated from the area on the Earth that is enclosed by a line with a constant value of 220 Dobson Units.
Minimum ozone values are currently around 250 DU. Maximum values are near 340 DU, but they are subsiding from peaks above 400 DU. The lower stratospheric temperature is near its summer peak, though temperatures remain below the normal for this time of year. The edge of the ozone hole passed over the tip of South America around September 26 to 28, October 9, 16 to 19. The edge again passed over this area from November 7 to 8. Significant differences between the various satellite analyses of ozone distribution remain. Although the amount of ozone destroying substances in the atmosphere is going.
The ozone hole over Antarctica shrank to its smallest peak since 1988, NASA said Thursday. The huge hole in Earth's protective ozone layer reached its maximum this year in September, and this year NASA said it was . million square miles (1. million square kilometers). This year's maximum hole is more than twice as big as the United States, but it's . million square miles smaller than last year and . million square miles smaller than 2015. Ozone is a colorless combination of three oxygen atoms. High in the atmosphere, about 7 to 25 miles (11 to 40 kilometers) above the Earth, ozone shields Earth from ultraviolet rays that cause skin cancer, crop damage and other problems. Scientists at the United Nations a few years ago determined that without the 1987 treaty, by 2030 there would have been an extra 2 million skin cancer cases.
The ozone hole is usually measured by reduction in the total column ozone above a point on the Earth's surface. This is normally expressed in Dobson units; abbreviated as "DU". The most prominent decrease in ozone has been in the lower stratosphere. In the Southern Hemisphere's mid-latitudes, total ozone remained constant over that time period Large volcanic eruptions have been shown to have substantial albeit uneven ozone-depleting effects, as observed with the 1991 eruption of Mt.

The last time the ozone hole was this small was in 1988 when Bobby McFerrin was burning up the charts with "Don't Worry Be Happy" and acid-wash jeans were the height of fashion. The ozone layer acts as a protective shroud over the Earth, blocking out ultraviolet radiation. NASA likens it to an atmospheric version of sunscreen. Our planet wouldn't be habitable without the ozone layer to help protect us from the sun. NASA and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been monitoring the ozone hole since it was first discovered in 1985.

The natural production and destruction of ozone in the stratosphere balances itself out over long time, meaning that historically there has been a constant level to protect the Earth by blocking out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Its absence increases the chances of skin cancer, cataract damage, and harm to humans, animals and plants. British scientists first noticed a dramatic thinning of ozone in the stratosphere some 10 kilometres above Antarctica in the mid 1980s.
