Orphée traces a path from darkness into light, inspired by the various re-tellings of the ancient tale of the poet Orpheus, from Ovid’s to Jean Cocteau’s.

Listen to Orphée by Johann Johannsson on Deezer.

Orphée, the latest album by the Icelandic composer and filmmaker Jóhann Jóhannsson is billed as his first studio album in six years since the somber and excellent The Miners’ Hymns. But during that time Jóhannsson has released eight records-three of which were scores to major films (including Sicario & The Theory of Everything ) and the rest music for smaller film projects, one of which Jóhannsson directed himself. But with even The Miners’ Hymns itself serving as a score to a film, the particular criteria for which Jóhannsson deems a record to be a studio album as opposed to a film.

In the six years between And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees and Orphée, Jóhann Jóhannsson became a celebrated film composer, earning back-to-back Oscar nominations for his life-affirming score for The Theory of Everything and his ominous, rough-edged music for Sicario. During this time, Jóhannsson continued to work on personal projects including this, his Deustche Grammophon debut.

Genre: Modern Classical. Having never paid a great deal to his soundtracks, simply because the movies he had worked on didn't spark my interest as far as films that required a coherent soundtrack go, this album is really the only thing I've heard of his and it is gorgeous. I do wonder now, what his bladerunner soundtrack would have sounded like, and hope to fully devour his work, in his honor.

Album · 2016 · 15 Songs. The dynamic, award-winning composer Jóhann Jóhansson takes up the tragic Greek tale of Orpheus in his first album for Deutsche Grammophon. Orphée features a kaleidoscopic array of instrumentations, from string quartet to electronics and choir, drawing from the Icelandic composer’s minimal, serene style to produce a focused, postmodern foray into atmosphere and myth. The record I just received copy sounds great. No pops or skips as some earlier reviewers described.
Ionzar
Awesome brilliant music. Appalling sound quality. One wonders what happened during pressing? Anyone else having this issue?
Cashoutmaster
When I visited Iceland I visited 12Tonar, one of the most popular record shops in the country. I bought 6 albums, one of them is by Johann Johannsson. The people in charge of the store showed me another Johann's work on his label, same name as the store. They talked about it very proud. I could notice he was a very respected man. I'm glad about It.
GEL
A bit late to the party, but I just got this record and the pressing is atrocious. I've had nothing but trouble from Deutsche Grammophon pressings. Their customer service is non existent. They don't seem to care about the pressing issues they continually have. Quite sad because they release a large amount of music I like. I'll think twice before getting any more vinyl from them. Price would have to be abnormally good.
Bev
Agree & same here, all my DG pressing are superb ! A widely respected classical label?! My From Sleep LP is clean as.
Friert
I knew this record would sound terrible as soon as i opened it. Massive amount of dead wax. Use as much of the playing surface as possible when cutting. Get more from the grooves then and not the distortion and clipping you find so frequently on modern pressings. the last two Bon Iver albums are the same. A utter disgrace that fine records can be made so poorly and sold.
Galanjov
If it were any of those things, wouldn't I have the issue on all my records and not just the ones from Grammophone (and Mondo)?
Jorius
Weird, I've many releases by Deutsche Grammophon including the Arrival soundtrack, and they all sound perfect... you should check to see if you have an issue with your speaker cables, stylus, or tracking.
generation of new
Just down right sad music. And I mean that with outmost respect. The opener "Flight from the city" is just breathtaking. A monochromatic modern world covered in steel, rain, fog and beauty.
Ynye
Any comment about the sound of this vinyl issue?. I would like to purchase it, but I'm a little afraid of its pressing...
Yojin
They used to have a fine reputation in the past. However this is now and based on this record, they are a shambles.
Minnai
Very bad pressing. Record is brand new but side B is terrifying - lots of scratches, pops and clicks. Side A is ok.
Jark
Precisely because of that LP I was asking... Well I purchased Orpheé some time ago and I can confirm that the pressing is quite good and sounds great
skriper
Tell that to my copy of Max Richter's From Sleep. =/
Stan
Agree, they can be trusted, and always seem to deliver high fidelity.
Biaemi
New copy finally arrived. Im convinced, this is the much better copy than I had before, worth buyin
Unereel
Unfortunately I cannot agree, my copy has quite a few pops and clicks as well as already lots of hairlines and fine scratches when I unpacked the record...ordered a replacement, will see if that copy is any better
Talvinl
I don't have the vinyl but I echo the previous reply. Deutsche Grammophon have a reputation for producing the highest quality vinyl out there and have done for decades.
Joony
It sounds great. Deutsche Grammophon always have high quality pressings
