Purple is the fourth studio album by metal band Baroness. It was released December 18, 2015 through the band's newly founded label Abraxan Hymns. It is the first album to be released by the band following their involvement in the 2012 bus accident that left nine people injured; it is also the first album to feature new band members Nick Jost and Sebastian Thomson, playing bass/keyboards and drums respectively and the last album to feature Pete Adams before his departure from the band in 2017.
Note: NPR's First Listen audio comes down after the album is released. However, you can still listen with the this site and Apple playlists at the bottom of the page. After 16 years of hard rock evolution, Baroness, now more than ever, sounds fascinated with the possibility of rock and roll's future. It's not the first time Baizley and company have cast their creative net as wide as it can go - in 2012, Baroness released a double album, Yellow and Green. However, the band recorded that album as a three-piece with Baizley handling all the bass duties, a process which he admits constrained him.
Red is the first full-length LP released by Baroness. Compared to their following albums, there are few lyrics. The tone of the album has a much darker and foreboding feeling than their following releases. Producer Phillip Cope. Guitar John Baizley & Brian Blickle.
Baroness currently find themselves in a place of great maturity, exhibiting superb musicianship. The array of instrumentation and emotion throughout not only make Gold & Grey a joy to listen to, but also an achievement of which Baroness can truly be proud. Baroness have outdone themselves with Gold & Grey. Armed with a fresh sound and well-honed talent, they are finally ready to be recognized as one of the most important bands in modern rock music.
Their third- and first for Relapse Records- is called Red Album, and it's seven minutes longer than its predecessors combined. It's also more ambitious, more accomplished, simply bigger: Here, the ideas Baroness have offered since 2003- a colossal, airtight rhythm section backing sludge-of-the-South vocals and guitars- are realized with purpose and aim. Of the four current genuinely unorthodox metal bands from Georgia- Mastodon, Harvey Milk, Kylesa (whose Phillip Cope produced Red Album), and Baroness- it's Baroness that are perhaps the most comely.
This is the first time Baroness has been featured in an Ozzfest lineup. Have you ever previously attended an Ozzfest or Knotfest? Sebastian: I have not, but I have got to tell you something. Purple was also the first album to be self-released through your label, Abraxan Hymns. Do you see yourself continuing releasing way in further albums and do you recommend self-releasing? Sebastian: I think Abraxan Hymns is dropping us.
On their first-ever full-length release (and first for the Relapse label), 2007's The Red Album, the riffs are quite reminiscent of guitar-driven, post-hardcore bands out of the mid-'90s (a style which would later serve as the basis for emo bands several years later), while singer/guitarist John Baizley only knows. one way to vocalize: holler, holler, holler.
