At this point in history listening to Peter Brötzmann improvise alongside two musicians a couple of decades younger than himself – a familiar activity for the past 20-odd years – is in a way analogous to hearing those 1940s sessions Sidney Bechet recorded with Bob Wilbur and Dick Wellstood. Here is a progenitor of a certain style, in the company of his acolytes who he accepts as equals since they have become conversant enough with the genre to bring their own idiosyncrasies and skills to the form.
Edwards and Noble, who have been heard with Joe McPhee, Akira Sakata, Alan Wilkinson, and Lol Coxhill are certainly up for the task. The music is presented as a 43-minute title track and two shortish improvisations, is both primordial and Ellingtonian. Those seemingly disparate concepts make sense here. Personnel: Peter Brotzmann: tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, b-flat clarinet, taragato; John Edwards: double bass; Steve Noble: drums.
This album has an average beat per minute of BPM (slowest/fastest tempos:, BPM).
Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards & Steve Noble – Nail Dogs By Ears, 06:44. Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards & Steve Noble Don't Fly Away. Peter Brötzmann, John Edwards & Steve Noble Nail Dogs By Ears.
Personnel: Peter Brotzmann: tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, b-flat clarinet, taragato; John Edwards: double bass; Steve Noble: drums. This is the second album by the Peter Brotzmann trio with John Edwards and Steve Noble, following The Worse the Better (they’re also together in a third one, Mental Shake, but with the addition of Jason Adasiewicz and his vibraphone).
Recording of the stunning first set performed by the trio of Peter Brötzmann, Steve Noble and John Edwards at Cafe OTO in January 2010 during Brotzmann's first residency at the venue. This was also the first time the trio had played together. Unrepeatable moments of collective inspiration and sudden sunlit shafts of modal near melody punctuate the continuing energy blur. Does the world need another Brötzmann album? Probably not, but as the inaugural release on Cafe OTO's in-house high quality vinyl-only label, this one is cause for celebration.
