From pop hooks to album covers to beats, we're rounding up some of the greatest of all time in music on Billboard. Our standard of selection wasn’t merely hits, but instead, songs that made a difference, that marked a moment, that influenced many and that were simply great compositions. Most importantly, even though 50 is not nearly a big enough number to encompass the huge universe of the Latin songbook, every one of these songs continues to be relevant today. Did anyone not dance the Macarena? The novelty track by Spanish duo Los del Río became a massive hit in 1995 and in 1996 it ranked No. 7 on Billboard's All Time Top 100 songs after spending 14 weeks at the top of the chart.

With Latin pop getting heightened visibility in the American mainstream this year, it’s time we call for a history lesson. Some of the most famous Latin pop songs have survived military dictatorships, war, famine and natural disasters – and they still hold up in spite of passing trends. Recorded with the Rafael de Paz Orchestra in Mexico City, the music doesn’t move so much as it glides, with a syncopated swing that’s puro Cubano. Accentuated with booming Afro-Latin percussion and horn-heavy American big band exoticism, the track’s legacy nevertheless hinges on Moré’s sultry and seductive tenor.

Il "Pomo d'Oro" orchestra. We have the guts! We love big opera, golden apples and gut strings.
