Founded in the 15th century, it ranks among the oldest of its kind, and, while originally created for singing the daily services in the college chapel, now enjoys an international tour schedule that has seen it perform all over Europe and beyond. Every Christmas Eve, millions of people tune in to watch the choir’s A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s – a service which has been continuously broadcast since 1928. Recorded in 1994, this reissue joins the group’s already extensive discography of Christmas music – recordings that have enhanced its worldwide fame and reputation

The Choir of King’s College is virtually the reigning house band for this kind of repertoire. Often backed by a pipe organ accompanist, the singers take on English chestnuts as familiar as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," putting their grand group stamp on each. Quieter songs that feature subsections of the group, like "While Shepherds Watched," have an equally affecting impact. The world-famous choir from the esteemed Cambridge University college. from Official Site: The Choir owes its existence to King Henry VI, who envisaged the daily singing of services in his magnificent chapel. This remains the Choir's raison d'être, and is an important part of the lives of its 16 choristers, who are educated on generous scholarships at King's College School, and the 14 choral scholars and two organ scholars, who study a variety of subjects in the College. The King's College Choir is a British choir. It is considered one of today's most accomplished and renowned representatives of the great English choral tradition.
Because the Choir sings for services daily, there is a reverence for the meaning and spirit of the music that isn't always found in holiday music collections. There is also a warmth in and a care for its ensemble work that represents a high level of musicianship from men and boys who are not necessarily studying to become professional musicians. This isn't something anyone would learn from the liner notes. All that Decca chose to put in the booklet was a track listing, as it would for a regular compilation album, which is something of a slight to Willcocks, the Choir, and the music,.

The Choir of King's College was founded in 1441 by England's King Henry VI as the resident ensemble of King's College Chapel, a status it continues to hold today. The choir shrank during some of the tumultuous events of the 15th through the 17th centuries but continued to operate. By the early 20th century, it had reached its present complement of 30 members: 16 boy choristers and 14 adult choral scholars, plus two organ scholars.
