Ravishing Grimness is the seventh studio album by Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone. It was released 29 September 1999 by Moonfog Productions. Nocturno Culto wrote the music for all the songs except "The Beast", which was the sole musical contribution by Fenriz, who contributed lyrics instead. Also, all the Ts in the liner notes and lyrics were replaced with inverted crosses.
Ravishing Grimness shows an experimental side of Darkthrone; still trying to be being honest to their black metal roots while branching out into a fun sound that would define themselves in later albums. The Claws of Time is definitely the highlight of the album though, starting with an optimistic sounding riff before closing with one of the best outros of their career. The title track is another track pick, having riffs that could've been B-sides off an early Burzum album. Still even the weaker songs have some redeemable qualities

Ravishing Grimness is an entirely level album, and though I dread to say it, probably the 'safest' they had released in the 90s. However, it is very much classic Darkthrone, and the rather reined in vibe of the compositions can hardly be faulted when the album sounds so good. This is not at the level of re-invention that some of their later efforts would pursue, it's just the basics re-organized with a new studio sound and a slightly more mellow set of lyrics (though they haven't lost all their edge, just read "Ravishing Grimness"). It also appeared that, by this time, the band members were quite aware of the impact that they had on the Black Metal scene
By the time of Ravishing Grimness, the paper-thin shrieks and feedback of the days of Transilvanian Hunger had long been beefed out some, so hearing the near-lushness (to a degree) of opening track "Lifeless," especially the majestic mid-song break, was more a continuation than a shocking change
