God Macabre’s The Winterlong, the band’s first and only record released in 1993, though largely forgotten, maintained its status as a lost gem among the other widely-acclaimed opuses that overshadowed it. The short but sweet legacy of God Macabre tastes fresh and valid many years after its birth, even rivaling the grander outputs of several of its stylistic siblings in grades of texture and design. It is a stunning, stunning piece of death metal; complex and varied, yet unyielding and intricate. The most striking thing about the album is it's heavy reliance on nuance and atmosphere to establish a setting of fear and dread.

God Macabre is a Swedish death metal band. They were formed in the winter of 1988 as a grindcore band named Botten På Burken. In 1989 they switched to playing death metal and changed their name to Macabre End. Jonas Stålhammar joined the band in the spring of 1990 and took over most of the songwriting (music). They released a demo in September 1990 titled Consumed by Darkness which turned into an underground hit. Thereafter they changed their name once again to God Macabre
