This signal was transmitted only once. And I'm not sure what Lynn is referring to with this reference, but the same titled track has been already played over and over on these speakers. If you like your dubstep with a zing, then Boxcutter is for you! Besides the above mentioned albums there are more goodies from Lynn. Last year, he delivered a collection of previously unreleased material produced in his earlier years, Balancing Lakes (Planet Mu, 2008). So make sure to grab that if you can.

ARECIBO MESSAGE finds Boxcutter, the recording moniker for dubstep/electro artist Barry Lynn, moving away from digital programming toward older school approaches that incorporate analog synths, guitar pedals, and analog delays. There are elements of classic rave and disco sprinkled throughout the mix, while Lynn mines the fertile dubstep territory staked out by Burial and others with a dark electro twist. ARICEBO MESSAGE manages to be heady and atmospheric without losing its deep, soulful grounding in groove.

Arecibo Message’ is a collection of shorter, more condensed tracks for Boxcutter. A Familiar Sound’ (also released on extended 12″mix through the new Kinnego records) features electronic soul duo Kinnego Flux with Brian Greene on vocals. This album sees Boxcutter ditching the computer sequencing and using lots of analogue synths, delays and guitar pedals to give an organic texture to the record ’ features more guitars and bass than previous records and influences such as Hendrix as well as 2 step Garage influences such as Wideboys are clear. A real trip of an album

I guess the opening track, "Sidetrak," could be considered dubstep, but it's perhaps a bit too clattery for purists. So much their loss, then, because Boxcutter's ARECIBO MESSAGE takes the genre in new directions. "Mya Rave v2" goes for a squelchier sound with, yes, that good ol' rave feeling. Elsewhere, "Arcadia 202" drifts into more abstract territory, like a spaceship careening out of control, while "Old School Astronomy" takes a mellow approach at first before rocketing into the stars. And is that a bit of soul vocals coming through on "A Familiar Sound"? Why, yes, it is. The "Otherside Remix (Earth is My Spaceship)" introduces actual dub to the dubstep, and some ghostly jazz trumpets toot their way onto "A Cosmic Parent." A strange and fascinating album, one that goes in some bold directions.

I found this album to be a huge change in direction and sound for Boxcutter. Glyphic was more or less a more polished version of Oneiric but this 3rd album, Arecibo Message is an entirely different beast from Barry Lynn. The core of the music remains dubstep but there is a lot of other influences going on here: acid, house and even drum & bass. The end result is pretty pleasing and there are some real monsters on here (the title track is godly). In my opinion, Boxcutter has really proven himself of this album and I have no problem pitting him as a equal to the other king of dubstep, Burial.
