Clyde Lensley McPhatter was an American rhythm-and-blues, soul and rock-and-roll singer. He was later the lead tenor of Billy Ward and His Dominoes and was largely responsible for the initial success of the group. After his tenure with the Dominoes, McPhatter formed his own group, the Drifters, and later worked as a solo performer

One of the great albums to come out of The Brill Building was Clyde McPhatter’ s 1964 release Songs Of The Big City, which was a concept album featuring, you guessed it, songs about city life. The album has that classic New York City sound with similar production values as singles by Dionne Warwick, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Neil Sedaka and the classic productions of Phil Spector. In 1964, McPhatter was deep into his contract with Mercury Records when he recorded The Shelter Of Your Arms. The song became a big hit for Sammy Davis J. who released his version the same year on Reprise records. It was one of two hits the song’s writer Jerry Samuels would score, the other was They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!, which he wrote and produced under the pseudonym Napoleon XIV.
