Rihanna - Anti album
My reaction to Rihanna's ANTI album Let's just say it was an interesting experience.
ANTI is Rihanna’s eighth studio album. Following a premature leak on Tidal, she released the album as a free download on January 28, 2016. The album spawned the number one Drake assisted hit Work, which as of April 18th 2016, has spent nine consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. With this album, Rihanna steps away from her pop and club roots. In an interview with MTV, she confessed that she wants to make timeless music: I just wanted to focus on things that felt real, that felt soulful, that felt forever. I wanted songs that I could perform in 15 years; I wanted an album that I could.

Of course, the superstar's latest includes the kind of bangers that she does best, but the LP also sees her going more experimental and more stripped-back than we've ever heard from the singer.
Anyone hoping that ANTI might be Rihanna’s opus, some grand declaration of intent, is likely to be underwhelmed. ANTI is a fun and conflicted pop record, at its most interesting when it’s at its smallest and most idiosyncratic. If the album has a narrative arc, it’s about disappointment: the ways in which the people you trust can still come up short in the end, and how lonesome that can feel.
Rihanna’s latest album, Anti, was expected to drop sometime late last year, with Kanye West acting as executive producer. However, months passed with little sign of an actual release date, the 27-year-old soon confirming Kanye would no longer be heavily involved with the project. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.
When Rihanna sings ‘I got to do things my own way, darling’ on opening track ‘Consideration’, it feels like a statement of intent. Anti’ arrives over three years since her last album – a lengthy wait from an artist who previously dispatched seven LPs in eight years – and without prior warning. After ‘Anti’ briefly appeared on streaming service Tidal by accident, it inevitably leaked yesterday, prompting Rihanna to think ‘sod this’ and give away the album for free. Fortunately, the music itself is less messy.
Sprawling, uneven and opaque – Rihanna’s eighth album sounds as uncertain as its botched launch. But, in a risk-averse world, its daring invention pays off. Alexis Petridis. On the most basic level, Anti looks like a concerted attempt to steer Rihanna away from the world of manufactured pop. Amid the sagas of romantic woe and the inevitable references to marijuana, there are a lot of lyrics about doing things her own way, being more creative, and a pointed-sounding line about her ability to cover shit in glitter and turn it gold.
