Their debut album entitled 'Welcome To This World' features Shane Cooper on bass and synths, Bokani Dyer on keys and synths, Sisonke Xonti on tenor sax, Reza Kota on guitar, Robin Fassie-Kock on trumpet and Marlon Witbooi on drums, as well as guest features from some legendary friends- namely Buddy Wells and Shabaka Hutchings. It is precisely that ambiguity of influences that pollinated Mabuta, the lack of purity that makes their music too slippery to neatly define as jazz, that has given them an advantage over traditional jazz contemporaries attempting to navigate an era where iconic jazz venues like Tagores and The Orbit have all closed their doors.
If the eyes are the windows to the soul and a portal opening to reality and closing on dreams, then the eyelids can be seen as the gatekeepers to such worlds. Mabuta-a genre-merging band taking its name from the Japanese word for eyelid-has a keen understanding of that concept. A dose of Afropop, à la Fela Kuti, opens the second half of the album, with guest tenor saxophonist Buddy Wells joining Mabuta for its trip to Nigerian soil.
