Stiff Little Fingers. Inflammable Material. These two singles make the purchase price of the album a priority.

Stiff Little Fingers are a punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in 1977, at the height of the Troubles. They started out as a schoolboy band called Highway Star (named after the Deep Purple song), doing rock covers, until they discovered punk. They split up after six years and four albums, although they reformed five years later, in 1987. Despite major personnel changes, they are still touring and recording.

On their debut album Inflammable Material lead guitarist/lead singer Jake Burns sounds as if he has had his throat lined with barbed wire on about 70 percent of the tracks. The rhythm section of the band Ali McMordie on bass and Brian Faloon on drums is drowned out on almost every song, due to Burns’ and Henry Cluney’s hard driving Guitar playing. This album was produced so little that it sounds more like a live show than a studio album, indeed these tracks sound almost identical in quality to the Stiff Little Fingers live album Hanx. The album starts off with a bang and a flash with the studio version of Stiff Little Fingers first single Suspect Device, you know where the album title came from when Burns screams out inflammable material planted in my head. Suspect device sets the stage with its political lyrics and hard, fast tune.

The other (Stiff Little Fingers – Suspect Device) was played every night for a week and Rough Trade (the only place in London to stock the single) was constantly running short of stock. Demand was so great, Geoff Travis approached the band so his label could re-release it and satisfy his customers. A 50/50 Split Profit Deal was agreed with a handshake – no Contracts, no Lawyers, no future markets exploitation clause, just a straightforward Manufacturing and Distribution deal.

The album to be taken out of the Golden Vault for reappraisal this week is 'Inflammable Material' by Stiff Little Fingers. You can describe 'punk' as a bomb of artistic perfection thrown into a tense society, exploding with the same ferocity as the anger it is mirroring. This is true for most punk bands that sprang up in the late '70s, and for Belfast’s Stiff Little Fingers, it rings true more so than for others and is presented in all its glorious white noise in the album - 'Inflammable Material'
