Giovanni Pergolesi was one of those unlucky artists whose life was cut short, in his case at the age of 26, before he could truly realize the potential that was so beautifully demonstrated in his Stabat Mater (completed in 1736, the year of his death). After his death, his 45-minute long comedic intermezzo La serva padrona became one of the most popular stage works of the mid-18th-century. The commedia del’arte antecedents are obvious. Serva Padrona is clearly a quickly-written work with few staging requirements, which served as half-time entertainment during a larger and more ambitious opera seria by Pergolesi. None of the numbers stands out as particularly memorable, with A Serpina penserate being probably the highlight.
