By New Dawn Singers from Album "A Little Grain of Wheat" song By David Nelson.
Parable of the Grain of Wheat (Greek: ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σῑ́του; ho kókkos toû sī́tou) is an allegory on resurrection, sacrifice, and ego death, given by Jesus in the New Testament (The Gospel of John). From John 12:24-26 (KJV). Verily, verily, I say unto you, еxcept a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal

Grain, or more accurately dependence on grain, is what separated farmers from foragers, Jacob from Esau. Grains underpin civilization: portable, easily renewable, nutritionally dense foods that can be grown in surplus and stored - or kept from those the holder deems unworthy. Every culture that tamed a grain, although it could easily be argued that the grains tamed us, has held that grain sacred. In Japan, there is a saying that each grain of rice contains 88 souls, and to waste one is a sin. Similar proverbs exist all over the world. My wheat was kind enough to hold onto its seeds until I got around to threshing. A certain, set percentage of wild wheat in a field will hold its seeds. A disadvantage, evolutionarily speaking. But when our ancestors discovered this, they kept replanting those disadvantaged plants so they can later harvest whole heads.

The proud little grain of wheat talked a great deal, but did not think quite so much, while its next neighbour thought a great deal and only talked when it was asked questions it could answer
