Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Eroica is the fact that Beethoven is able to continue beyond the Marica funebre. A generation later, Schubert would write two symphonic movements of similar scope and intensity, only to find himself completely stymied as to what to say next. Beethoven might have been forgiven for leaving us with his own Unfinished symphony, but, as only a genius could, he manages to show how life reinvents itself when all seems to have been lost.

For directness, firmness, and coherence, Gunther Herbig's performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, "Eroica," with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is certainly a worthwhile interpretation, though the recording has some qualities that make it a little less than extraordinary. Because the Royal Philharmonic Masterworks series is specifically promoted as an audiophile collection, this CD should offer much better reproduction than it delivers

After this the orchestra-attendant enters and threatens them with the Sinfonia Eroica if they are not quiet, and makes a speech in which he tells them that the time has gone by for clearness and force, spirit and fancy, "like those of Gluck, Handel, and Mozart," and that the following (evidently an intentional caricature of the work before us) is the last.
