Swanlights is neither Antony's most immediate nor best album. It lacks its singular masterpiece, its "Cripple and the Starfish", "Hope There's Someone", or "Aeon". What's more, the album's half-dozen stylistic shifts show that, maybe for the first time, one of music's most assured stylists might be a bit unsettled. It's a brilliantly composed and played record, with the Johnsons responding exquisitely to Antony's production and the arrangements of young talents like Nico Muhly and Maxim Moston.
Album-opener "Everything Is New" features one of his standard tropes: using a repetitive piano line and his voice to play upon the title in various ways, breaking the words up in various combinations and cadences to create a mantra-like effect before bringing in the band, in a near-modal exploration, to hang his lyrics on.

It’s still an album that contains peerless highs, particularly when Antony surrenders himself completely to songs like ‘Everything Is New’ and ‘Swanlights’, but a more dynamic reconstruction of the Johnsons’ core sound would be most welcome next time around.
2010’s Swanlights, Antony & The Johnsons’ fourth album, runs toward the light, as unlikely as that might seem. The tension is still here. Ghost is a nervous piano tune where the notes scurry over the backing strings while Hegarty’s voice heads to the heavens. I’m In Love breaks the spell of his miseries with a surprisingly chipper vocal take and an upbeat buzz to the avant-cabaret music that can’t help but sound like a carnival about to shut down. This Brecht-Weill effect lines the arrangements throughout.
Album: Antony & the Johnsons, Swanlights (Rough Trade). The voice of an angel, the lyrics of a crossword puzzle. Recorded with the help of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, Swanlights is a twinkling and crystalline thing, with a lyrical lexicon which is heavy on metaphors drawn from nature – snakes and blackbirds, saltwater and nectar – and often arcane and obscure. Take this crossword clue of a lyric: "Dancing with his casket, Christ becomes wife" (from "Salt Silver Oxygen"). Released date 11 October 2010. Members owning this album5.
