In 1966 Curtis recorded 3 songs with Jimi Hendrix, "Linda Lou", "Baby How About You" and "I Can't Take It". Unissued the tapes were later destroyed in a fire at Atlantic's master tape library. He worked with The Coasters, and led Aretha Franklin's backing band the Kingpins. The Kingpins opened for the Beatles during their 1965 performance at Shea Stadium Death. Curtis is the debut album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in September 1970. Produced by Mayfield, it was released on his own label Curtom Records. The musical styles of Curtis moved further away from the pop-soul sounds of Mayfield's previous group The Impressions and featured more of a funk and ed sound. The album's subject matter incorporates political and social concerns of the time.

James Curtis (4 July 1907 – 1977) was a British author who was best known for his novels, They Drive By Night and There Ain't No Justice, both of which were made into feature films. James Curtis was born Geoffrey Basil Maiden, in Sturry, Kent on 4 July 1907. He was privately educated in Kent and after leaving school he moved to London.

It has been speculated that he served time in prison, but there is no evidence to back this up.
