Who Can You Trust? is the debut studio album by English electronic music group Morcheeba. It was released in 1996 on China Records in the United Kingdom and Discovery and Sire Records in the United States. Stylistically, the album is by far the band's most trip hop oriented release, consisting of languid, looping grooves, using mostly Rhodes piano, electric guitar and scratching. At the end of 1998 the album was re-issued as 2-CDs with the 8 track disc Beats & B-Sides collection.

Who Can You trust is Morcheeba's first major effort and it's a strong one. Standout tracks for me include "Trigger Hippie" and "Tape Loop," which both should be part of any right-thinking trip-hop mix. The first two-thirds of the disc move consistently and well, giving way to a quiet and gloomy atmosphere in the latter part of the album. This disc and Big Calm both make me think of the old early 70's soul albums and of early, early Funkadelic.

Who Can You trust? Almost Done.

As their debut, Who Can You Trust?, illustrates, the trio has a keen sense of how to make a pop melody seem dangerous and foreign by having it crawl out of the murk of creeping beats and ominous samples. Although the group lacks the visionary spark of Tricky and Portishead, and their songs aren't as bracing as the Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba have a distinctive, idiosyncratic sound that makes Who Can You Trust? entrancing  . Although the latter half of the album tends to sound a little samey, without many beats or hooks to distinguish each song, the album remains a hauntingly atmospheric - and quite terrific - debut. This was actually my first exposure to and purchase of material by Morcheeba in 1998. This title comes as 2 regular jewel cases in a rather nondescript white/black/green sleeve type card box. The 2nd disc that came with this release is by far my favourite and most listened to Morcheeba title. It's largely instrumental, save for a few looped voice samples here and there and in IMHO lacks the commercial "fluffiness" of Morcheebas regular albums. Excellent deep groove with bass to match. It's ironic since buying this release I've managed to keep collecting all Morcheeba releases thru to the current album Charango and I hardly damn well listen to them! The collecting bug is a strange thing....
