Greig Stewart "Chubby" Jackson (October 25, 1918 – October 1, 2003) was an American jazz double-bassist and band leader. Born in New York City, Jackson began at the age of seventeen as a clarinetist, but quickly changed to bass. Jackson performed and/or recorded with Louis Armstrong, Raymond Scott, Jan Savitt, Henry Busse, Charlie Barnet, Oscar Pettiford, Charlie Ventura, Lionel Hampton, Bill Harris, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, Lennie Tristano and others.
Album: The Cool School.
Bassist Chubby Jackson has only led record dates on an irregular basis throughout his long career. This LP has two of Jackson's finest studio sessions, a sextet set from 1947 that features trumpeter Conte Candoli and the obscure but fine tenor Emmett Carls, and an all-star 12-piece big band date. The latter set really has an impressive personnel listing, including trumpeter Howard McGhee, trombonists . Johnson and Kai Winding, both Zoot Sims and Georgie Auld on tenors and baritonist Gerry Mulligan in an early outing.
