Manona
Two Worlds Collide is an amazingly timeless pop tune, as Inspiral Carpets managed to write three or four during their carreer (and that's much!). The lyrics and melody are simple yet imaginative and powerful, the vocals are sonorous as ever with Tom Hingley, and keyboarder Clint Boon chooses to play the piano instead of his Farfisa organ. The guitars perhaps give a hint of the record's production time, as they seem influenced by the shoegaze aesthetics predominant in the early nineties British indie scene; but that's fine, as they suit the song very well. Boomerang on the B-side is another impressive Inspiral Carpets tune. It sounds almost jazzy, has a groovy rhythm section which in parts comes to the foreground, then again it floats in layers of organ, guitar and noise. With all the experimentation it still sounds harmonious and so it fits that it is a love song. The M People remixes are a bit shameful given the excellent remixes on earlier IC 12 inches. On The Twelve Inch Mix M People do exactly what you would expect from them, and it just doesn't work. The tune is at mid- to downtempo and only lives thanks to the bands's groove and sound layering. The stiff house beat and slightly new arrangement (basically just less guitars) make the tune sound slow, boring, lifeless. The Dub Mix does a little better, bit is still not worth mentioning.
