Rocky Dennis - Maple Leaves album
Maple Leaves taken from the EP of the same name, containing five songs by Jens Lekman as Rocky Dennis.
Rocky Dennis in Heaven is an extended play by Swedish indie pop musician Jens Lekman. It was released on 21 January 2004 on Service. The EP was later released as simply Rocky Dennis on 6 April 2004 on Secretly Canadian. The EP's songs were written about the life and artistic biographies of Roy L. Dennis, who suffered from the extremely rare medical condition known as craniodiaphyseal dysplasia.
The Rocky Dennis EP takes a half-turn toward the coy, ing Belle & Sebastian, with no less than three of its tracks alluding to the Mask star to some degree. But the songs benefit from slightly brighter production here-with the piano and finger snaps of the self-referential Jens Lekman’s Farewell Song to Rocky Dennis and the Burt Bacharach nod and wedding-singer narrative of If You Ever Need a Stranger -and they’re glistening with pristine crispness.
The Maple Leaves EP contains the outstanding minor hit "Black Cab, where the self-deprecating Lekman explains, "I killed the party again, I ruined it for my friends over a catchy guitar melody of "There She Goes calibre. The Rocky Dennis EP has a more polished sound, especially on the lead-in track "Rocky Dennis Farewell Song To The Blind Girl or "Jens Lekmans Farewell Song To Rocky Dennis. Puzzling titles aside, these are remarkably accomplished, albeit brutally twee gems of songs. His deft way of approaching ballads is his strong point so far, although a full album is in the works that may have a few surprises in store for us. Notorious for his early lo-fi recordings, the instrumentation and lush sound on these EPs is impressive.
Maple Leaves is an extended play by Swedish indie pop musician Jens Lekman. It was released on 1 October 2003 on Service and on 3 February 2004 on Secretly Canadian. The songs on the EP can also be found on Lekman's 2005 release, Oh You're So Silent Jens. The title song "Maple Leaves" centers on a hallmark of Lekman's lyrics, puns and an advanced level of understanding of English idioms

While its counterpart, the Rocky Dennis EP, is all soft light and strings, this one swings moods with abandon. A droll miserablist of Smiths vintage, Lekman intones like a baroque Stephin Merritt on the Left Banke-filching "Black Cab": "Oh no Goddamn/I missed the last tram/I killed the party again/Goddamn Goddamn". The pick of two near-simultaneous EP releases from the 22-year-old Swede, the four-track Maple Leaves is little short of astounding.
