James Album is the self-titled fourth studio album by British electronic musician Richard D. James, under his pseudonym Aphex Twin. In the United Kingdom, the album was released on 4 November 1996 through Warp. In the United States, it was released on 28 January 1997 by Sire Records, with the Girl/Boy EP included as bonus tracks. A reissue on vinyl was released on 18 September 2012. James Album is the fourth studio album by English electronic musician Richard D. James under the alias Aphex Twin, released on Warp Records in 1996. The album was a step away from the ambient music of James' previous releases and drew influence from the faster rhythms of jungle and drum and bass styles. The album charted in the United Kingdom peaking at number 62 on the UK Albums Chart. The breakbeats on Richard D. James album were partly inspired by James' friend Luke Vibert (pictured in 2008). James has stated that most of Richard D. James Album was composed on his Macintosh computer and that the album took longer to create than any of his previous albums. Some tracks on the album include vocals from James including "To Cure a Weakling Child", for which James manipulated his voice to sound like a child giving a lecture about arms.

Contemporaries Orbital and Underworld were beginning to incorporate moderate use of drum'n'bass in their work as well, but this album was more extreme than virtually all jungle being made at the time. The beats are jackhammer quick and even more jarring considering what is - for the most part - laid over the top: the same fragile, slow-moving melodies that characterized Aphex Twin's earlier ambient works. Most overtly disturbing is "Milkman," the first straight-ahead vocal track from Aphex Twin; the song is a child-like ode that gradually deteriorates into a bizarre.

mine has a little warp and very tight center hole…
Try some lube that should loosen your hole up a bit
I have listened to this over the years in several formats (mp3 for a long time; CD the past few years) and listening to this reissue, I swear I am hearing completely different tracks. There is so much detail and texture in the sounds and synths that I'd never picked up before. I haven't done an A/B with my CD copy on the same amp/headphone setup (probably won't), but this is really the way to hear it. Like another commenter stated, was never my favorite Aphex album, but I think I just must have been missing so much, hearing it this way definitely proves itself to be the classic its hyped to be (to me, at least). Also, the CD adds the Girl/Boy Song EP, but the additional tracks don't make it a better album, they make it more inconsistent and larkey. The EP tracks belong on their goofy EP.
Dude, according to Warp this was mastered from the CD-master. I don't know what you are hearing, but whatever it is it's also on the CD. Maybe what you hear are the typical vinyl-artefacts and distortion from a shitty medium that has roughly 10 bits of resolution.
Pressing sounds great, though the artwork is slightly pixelated. Is that the case on the original pressing? (I think I remember reading RDJ did the cover in Photoshop, maybe it was always shit resolution).
Thank you for checking!comment must be at least 10 words
Recently acquired an original UK pressing, and yes its cover is also slightly pixelated.
Like all the other listeners here who posted a comment on this, this is a wonderful repress. Great work done and shout-out to WARP for re-releasing this classic album!
Perfect repress indeed. I had not listened to this in years, having written it off after playing the CD to death (you get too familiar with a record and loose focus I guess), but this is an essential album, so many ideas, beyond-genius programming, just sheer (weird, wicked) beauty. Play high and loud on a sunny spring morning for added effect. Best tracks: A1, A5, B2
No complaints with this pressing, sounds great - exactly as a repress should be done.
Another repress coming out on Oct. 2Edit: Pushed back to the 17thEdit2: Pushed back AGAIN to the 31stEdit3: FINALLY shipping
Gorgeous pressing of this record. Just how a nice 180g pressing should be.
Very influential album by Aphex Twin!
This is one seriously good repress. Flat record, no surface noise.I don't have the original vinyl, just the cd. Have any tracks been remixed? Logan-Rock Witch has never been my favourite, but it sounds so different to how i remember it. Same goes for To Cure A Weakling Child, but that's probably because I prefer the version on the Come To Daddy ep. This was never my favourite Aphex album, but this re-issue had me enjoying it more than I have in many years. Worth buying if you don't already have the original vinyl.
ït's just a pity its already on 33 rpm. It would be nice if they played on 45rpm and you could play the tracks slower on 33 rpm.
I noticed a difference in Logan-Rock Witch, but I had never heard the CD version, just mp3s. I chalked it up to artifacts in the compression of the mp3 files versus the clarity of the vinyl release. Now I'm interested to go back and listen to a CD copy.
