Mikhail Chekalin, Михаил Чекалин. Mikhail Chekalin is one of those. Arguably he is the most influential modern composer of the last 35 years in the former USSR, now Russia. Over the span of his career Chekalin has produced some 30+ works that range the sonic spectrum for Post Pop, to free-jazz, electronic, and Post Symphonic. While his music was known to me since the 1980s/ Archie Patterson.

Mikhail Chekalin "Historic Edition, Vol.1 - A Well Prepared Electric Organ (rec. 1974-1982)"Mikhail Chekalin has been one of the most influential modern composers of the last 35 years in the former USSR, now Russia. His work was experimental; in fact, his raison d'etre was specifically to break new ground stylistically. He worked outside the boundaries of established culture, while at the same time breaching its borders when possible to expose his art and music to the people at large. The Historic Edition features 6 CDs that document unreleased music recorded during his early period.Over the span of his long career, Chekalin has produced some 40+ works that range the sonic spectrum for Post Pop, to free jazz, electronic, and Post Symphonic. During the 1980s, he made a breakthrough of sorts when the state owned Melodiya label released several albums of his music. For the most part, however he created art and produced music underneath the radar.Apparently the very notion is reminiscent of and, by the same token, inwardly opposed to Bach's Well Tempered Clavier Volume 1's title composition manifests A Well-Tempered Electric Organ. In total disregard of the established tendencies of mid 70s - early 80s, these compositions, even though electronic, have been recorded without either synthesizers and/or sequencers or over-dubbing. These works have been produced solely by means of an electronic organ, various sound effects and vocalizing. This same tradition 'electronic without synthesizers and/or sequencers' is being paid homage to by "Pianophonia" piece for prepared piano dating back to the year 1974; that, with a certain exception of 'live' fragments , is over-dub-free as well. However, this unique and unifying concept by no means imposes any restrictions on the range of stylistic expression, covering the whole span from avant-garde, progressive and psychedelic rock up to melodic and blues elements. Symphonic counterpoint rhythms are already traceable in these compositions as well as tranceadelic messages and movements that are of similar character with those usually associated with M. Chekalin's well-famed outstanding The Meditations for Prepared Electronic Organ, released at "Melodiya" label. As the chance would have it, The Meditations... have found their way into the hands of Franco Donatoni, as early as the very beginnings of the eighties, and have won his exceptionally brilliant approval. As the illustrious maestro would have it, Chekalin should have produced a radical shift, by altogether abandoning a melodic principle and pursuing an avant-garde tradition of atonality and sonority.Conversely, as far as some eminent Soviet composers of the epoch have been concerned, Mikhail Chekalin should have done just the opposite - to retrieve melodics and tonality, while the point was that works under discussion happened to be definitely avant-garde. Chekalin, as it were, has done neither. Apparently, the composer has chosen to follow in Charles Ives' tracks and to leave the alternative of avant-garde principle versus melodic one exactly as a question - a question without an answer. This disc features unreleased works by Mikhail Chekalin from the dawn of experimental electronic music era, way back in mid 70s - early 80s, their electronic multidimensional vision sweeping far and wide, way wider than an apparent line in the electronic music landscape as seen by most.-A.
