Johnny Rivers was known more for the three big hits he had, Memphis, Secret Agent Man, Rockin' Pnumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu. The rest of the songs on this disc were originally recorded by other artists, but it is a good set of songs. This is a great album; There's another one that has more songs but the versions on this one are much better. The feel of Johnny Rivers performing live is exactly what I think of when I want to hear Johnny Rivers. Secret Agent Man is the BEST, not complex, very much a "less is more" type of song. Great voice; great guitar.
Johnny Rivers (born John Henry Ramistella, November 7, 1942, New York City) is an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. His styles include folk songs, blues, and revivals of old-time rock 'n' roll songs and some original material.
Southern-born, Los Angeles-based Rivers is the living embodiment of the swinging Sunset Strip scene of the mid-1960s. In 1964 the singer/guitarist had a record-breaking residency at the famed Whiskey A-Go-Go, where he and his very tight, rocking band would pack them in for night after night of Chuck Berry-inspired rock and southern soul. Rivers held his own against the British invasion, having a huge hit with Berry's "Memphis," and later with his signature "Secret Agent Man"
