Kevyn Lettau, Peter Sprague, Michael Shapiro - Brazil Jazz album
But despite its limitations and shortcomings, Simple Life reminded us that Lettau had potential.
Label: JVC – JVC-6002-2. Format: CD, Album, 20 bit K2. Country: US.
Before signing with JVC in 1992, Kevyn Lettau recorded two albums for Nova: first came her self-titled debut album, followed by Brasiljazz in 1991. On this collection of jazzy Brazilian pop, the singer is joined by guitarist Peter Sprague and percussionist Michael Spiro. A hit at NAC radio, Brasiljazz demonstrated that Lettau was a competent, pleasant singer who could be charming. Lettau gets into a straight-ahead jazz groove on an enjoyable version of Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose" and even delivers some Sarah Vaughan-influenced scat singing, but make no mistake: this is a pop album first and foremost.

Kevyn Lettau grew up in Berlin, Germany, moving to San Diego when she was 14. By age 17 she’d caught the singing bug and began working with guitarist Peter Sprague singing jazz, R&B and Brazilian music around town, most often with Sprague’s Dance of the Universe Orchestra (which frequently played at Elario’s, on the top floor of the Hotel La Jolla). The band’s unique blend of Brazilian music, straight-ahead jazz, and covers of tunes by Chick Corea and Weather Report made them somewhat of a local jazz phenomenon.
