Rock and Roll" is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, which was first released as the second track from the band's fourth album in 1971. The song includes a guest appearance by the Rolling Stones pianist Ian Stewart. In 1972 Robert Christgau called it "simply the most dynamic hard-rock song in the music. Befitting its title, the song is based on one of the most popular structures in rock and roll, the three-chord song. It is performed in the key of A at a tempo of 170 beats per minute.
In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.
The great 8th note piano playing on the track was performed by Ian Andrew Robert Stewart who was one of the co-founders of the Rolling Stones back in 1963. Stevie’s backup singers added some sweet harmonies to this very enjoyable cover of the Led Zeppelin classic. The Foo Fighters have been one of the greatest rock and roll bands of the past twenty years that have kept the spirit of pure loud rock and roll alive.
Led Zeppelin took some liberties, I must say, Page admitted. As far as my end of it goes, I always tried to bring something fresh to anything that I used, he claimed. He put the blame on Plant: Robert was supposed to change the lyrics, and he didn’t always do that, which is what brought on most of the grief. This song, more than any other track on Led Zeppelin’s debut album, established their epic sweep. It was written by American folk singer Anne Bredon in the 1950s: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, however, were fans of Joan Baez and knew the track from her 1962 album Joan Baez in Concert, Part 1. (Page has said that he learned the song in the days of sitting in the darkness, playing my six-string behind Marianne Faithfull.
