Lester Flatt, the veteran singer and guitarist who performed for 25 years with the bluegrass duo of Flatt and Scruggs, died at a hospital in Nashville yesterday of heart failure following a long illness. He was 64 years old. Surviviors include three brothers and three sisters. His oldtimey guitar style hadn't the virtuosity of Mr. Scruggs's banjo playing, but it and his keening singing reflected the traditional virtues of rural Southern white music. In combination with Mr. Scruggs, however, the two men exerted a considerable influence on the popmusic world of the 1960's, as their appearances in bigcity nightclubs, colleges, outdoor summer festivals and even Carnegie Hall attested.
