Cold Cave's debut album, Love Comes Close, was so strong and original, so filled with heart-stopping songs built around hissing electronics and dancefloor-ready beats, that it must have been hard for Wes Eisold and Caralee McElroy to think about bettering it. Especially after McElroy left the group. Despite these changes and the inherent challenges of the follow-up, Cherish the Light Years succeeds almost completely. It’s a different kind of record, to be sure; everything about it feels bigger, sleeker, and more assured from the vocals to the production
Cherish The Light Years’ lead-off slugger The Great Pan Is Dead will be hard to eclipse - not only by the rest of the album, but by just about any other song this year. Singer Wesley Eisold leans on his former hardcore influences harder than ever, evinced in the first seconds by the tremolo-picked guitar assault.
He’s Honor Roll material, clearly driven with a passion that makes one wonder if Eisold is actually Madchester scene o Tony Wilson incarnate.
Cold Cave was founded in 2007 by Wesley Eisold, former vocalist of hardcore groups Give Up the Ghost (previously known as American Nightmare), Some Girls. and Heartworm Press founder. Cold Cave represents Eisold's first venture into instrumentation Love Comes Close (2007–2010). two-and-a-half-week tour and Eisold said performing with a full band was something that failed to materialize during Cherish the Light Years tours. While continuing to work on a follow-up to Cherish the Light Years, and not under contract with a label, Eisold began independently releasing a series of stand-alone singles. and recorded these new songs by himself similar to how songs on Cremations and Love Comes Close were crafted. He said they were created, "by myself, at a desk in my apartment. It was freeing and exciting in a way because I didn't owe anyone.

Cherish The Light Years. The Great Pan is Dead" is one of those openers that's impossible to make it past. Featuring one of singer Wesley Eisold's most confident vocal performances to date, it's a wall-of-sound art-pop anthem whose punch recalls Eno's "Needles in the Camel's Ey. When you do get around to listening to the rest of the album it won't disappoint
Cold Cave’s third album finds Wes Eisold at the peak, to date at least, of a steady trajectory into pop music. Rarely are things that straight, but in the case of Cold Cave, it seems they are. Prior to the project’s birth, Eisold made punk and hardcore in several bands, then, Cremations (the first CC album, 2009) was a solo war of static, ghosts and burnt out circuitry, melodies occasionally crying out from behind the cobwebs. Love Comes Close (released later in 2009, and recorded as either a three or a four-piece) was minimal, hook-driven synth-pop with a cheap, goths at the disco aesthetic,. Cherish the Light Years is an understandable move then, and in some ways a brave one, but it’s definitely Cold Cave’s weakest record to date.
