1977 is the first official album by Ash, released in May 1996 in the United Kingdom and the following month in the US. The album proved popular in the UK and Ireland, and to a lesser degree elsewhere, where Britpop was a smaller cult phenomenon. It is ranked at 417 on the NME poll of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Ash finally seem to have gotten around to growing up some, but the maturity of a song like "Walking Barefoot" actually suits them well, especially when it's countered with some solid looks over the shoulder at a time when the 'punk' was the louder half of the band's punk-pop equation. And frequently, the newfound polish that coats the record is actually advantageous- for example, "Candy" is a stately tribute to a lover, riding on clouds of swirling strings sampled from the Walker Brothers' "Make It Easy on Yourself. Regardless of its conceptual significance, though, Free All Angels certainly works on another level.

Free All Angels is the third studio album by Ash, which was initially released on 16 April 2001, through Infectious Records. The name of the album is taken from a T-shirt worn by a Hells Angel. Speaking to Kerrang! in 2008, Tim Wheeler remembered: I wasn't going to make any old commercial shit, I wanted to write brilliant songs that would actually speak to people. All CD versions of Free All Angels apart from the Japanese release include Version . of the Ash video mixer software.
