Exodus is the ninth studio album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records following Rastaman Vibration (1976). On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck with a bullet, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London where Exodus was recorded.

In the wake of the assassination attempt, Marley and his band left Jamaica and settled in London for two years, where he recorded 1977's Exodus. Thematically, Exodus represented a subtle but significant shift for Marley; while he continued to speak out against political corruption and for freedom and equality for Third World people, his lyrics dealt less with specifics and more with generalities and the need for peace and love (though "So Much Things to Say," "Guiltiness," and "The Heathen" demonstrate the bullets had taken only so much.

If any album could be declared Bob Marley’s masterpiece, it was Exodus. Recorded during a period of exile in London in the aftermath of a gun attack on Marley’s home in Jamaica, it was a musical statement of towering authority which combined visions of Biblical drama with profound expressions of solidarity and tender personal feelings. Released on 3 June 1977, it housed a string of Marley’s biggest and best-loved hits: ‘Jamming’, ‘Waiting In Vain’, ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘One Love/People Get Ready’ and, of course, the title track.

During the recording of Exodus, Marley was in exile in London, England. Just before his exile, Bob survived an assassination attempt while in Jamaica. A shooter entered his home in Kingston, injuring Bob, his wife, Rita, and his manager, Don Taylor. Marley survived, and performed in a free Smile Jamaica concert two days later. Marley spent two years in exile in London, putting out the albums Exodus and Kaya. Exodus went gold in the US, UK, and Canada

Exodus, commonly considered as Marley’s opus, was released in 1977, after Marley’s biggest commercial success in America, the mostly unremarkable Rastaman Vibration. Marley finally managed to grow from being the cult hero of hazy-eyed frat boys to being a legitimate star, and easily the most successful and identifiable reggae star at the time. But the biggest event of this time period was in December of 1976. Two days before Marley was set to play the Smile Jamaica concert, which was organized by the prime minister of said country, Marley and his wife were gunned down inside his house. But this is still very much Marley’s album, and it shines through with his vocal talent and his lyrical content. Unlike other Marley albums, Exodus shies away from the cryptic story-telling of previous albums and tells much more straight-forward stories.

Produced by Bob Marley and the Wailers and recorded at London's Fallout Shelter and Basing St. studios, Exodus peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. This year, the Marley Family, Island Records and UMe will mark Exodus' 40th anniversary with a series of four reissues. Below, Billboard revisits Exodus' 10 original tracks, which elevated the reggae star into a global phenomenon.

I have a large (almost complete) collection of mofi vinyl. The one thing I have noticed is that I really like some mofi versions better than the 1st pressings,1/2 speed mastering brings out things in the recording that you couldn't//can't/Don't hear.I will say this. Even if you don't care for the mobile Fidelity version of a recording, don't tell the artist. In most cases their comments are it sounds like what we recorded, and they're supprised and some comments are why did the recording company do this or that (this or that, and it's almost always for better over the air radio sound , and sometimes it's not the same as the artist recording.Usually mofi tries to get recording engineers and mastering experienced with the artist and the recording at hand.Lots of times the artist is involved.( Unfortunately Bob would not have been able to be there for the re-recording.)

I really want to know whether this vinyl sounds as good as the current Discogs prices would suggest. Can anyone tell me about this? I have the MOFI versions of Abbey Road and Hot Buttered Soul. I think they sound OK, but I wonder if their premium prices are mainly driven by the scarcity of the reissues, rather than some kind of objectively massive boost in sound quality. The Miles Davis MOFIs on the other hand are f***ing dope. Please discuss!

Hi kyl2113 - obviously there is a subjective element in this. I was wondering the same question (and also about the 24k CD) and went through a long thread on Steve Hoffman forum, precisely on this topic. Bottomline (for me) : not worth the extra money, better focus on 1st press UK and 1st press Japan (or apparently even better, the first box set). I have several copies, including first french and the Japan 200g remaster of the late 2000s, and it sounds very good to me, maybe a little sharp for some people, but amazing depth and detail. For the price of the Mofi LP, you can probably buy several NM copies of early press.
