Exodus is the ninth studio album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records following Rastaman Vibration (1976). On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck with a bullet, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London where Exodus was recorded.
In the wake of the assassination attempt, Marley and his band left Jamaica and settled in London for two years, where he recorded 1977's Exodus. Thematically, Exodus represented a subtle but significant shift for Marley; while he continued to speak out against political corruption and for freedom and equality for Third World people, his lyrics dealt less with specifics and more with generalities and the need for peace and love (though "So Much Things to Say," "Guiltiness," and "The Heathen" demonstrate the bullets had taken only so much.

If any album could be declared Bob Marley’s masterpiece, it was Exodus. Recorded during a period of exile in London in the aftermath of a gun attack on Marley’s home in Jamaica, it was a musical statement of towering authority which combined visions of Biblical drama with profound expressions of solidarity and tender personal feelings. Released on 3 June 1977, it housed a string of Marley’s biggest and best-loved hits: ‘Jamming’, ‘Waiting In Vain’, ‘Three Little Birds’, ‘One Love/People Get Ready’ and, of course, the title track.
During the recording of Exodus, Marley was in exile in London, England. Just before his exile, Bob survived an assassination attempt while in Jamaica. A shooter entered his home in Kingston, injuring Bob, his wife, Rita, and his manager, Don Taylor. Marley survived, and performed in a free Smile Jamaica concert two days later. Marley spent two years in exile in London, putting out the albums Exodus and Kaya. Exodus went gold in the US, UK, and Canada

Exodus, commonly considered as Marley’s opus, was released in 1977, after Marley’s biggest commercial success in America, the mostly unremarkable Rastaman Vibration. Marley finally managed to grow from being the cult hero of hazy-eyed frat boys to being a legitimate star, and easily the most successful and identifiable reggae star at the time. But the biggest event of this time period was in December of 1976. Two days before Marley was set to play the Smile Jamaica concert, which was organized by the prime minister of said country, Marley and his wife were gunned down inside his house. But this is still very much Marley’s album, and it shines through with his vocal talent and his lyrical content. Unlike other Marley albums, Exodus shies away from the cryptic story-telling of previous albums and tells much more straight-forward stories.
Produced by Bob Marley and the Wailers and recorded at London's Fallout Shelter and Basing St. studios, Exodus peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. This year, the Marley Family, Island Records and UMe will mark Exodus' 40th anniversary with a series of four reissues. Below, Billboard revisits Exodus' 10 original tracks, which elevated the reggae star into a global phenomenon.
