DON'T KILL THE ANIMALS Nina Hagen (Germany) & Lene Lovich
At her best Nina Hagen was deliciously abrasive - an East German post-punk princess whose brash delivery was coupled with real musical talent and a wide vocal range. By the end of the '80s, however, she had descended into pop trash, rehashing the same kinds of synth-enforced songs again and again. Her self-titled album is no exception. Largely sung in English, it contains mostly questionable covers, including Janis Joplin's "Move Over," a version of the gospel classic "Hold Me," and a truly awful rendition of "Ave Maria
The Nina Hagen Band is one of the few, perhaps the only album from my early years I still listen to really loud even now, close to thirty years after it first hit my consciousness. This is a dense, muscular punk album with an art-punk aesthetic, anchored by Hagen's incredible vocal range and power. She was an opera prodigy from the time she was 9 or 10, and you can really tell here. And her backup band is amazing, too, with a monster drummer who holds every piece of it together by sheer force of will.
Songstress Nina Hagen preaches for peace and power to the people on her latest album "Volksbeat" (Folk Beat). Civil rights songwriters and anti-establishment icons are among those who get a nod from the German singer. Nina Hagen: Because the heartbeat of a people, the rhythm of a nation, compose its songs. There have always been propagandists who say "Yeah, Adolf Hitler always used the word 'Volk. But we are the people.
Watch out, the world's behind you There's always someone around you who will call It's nothing at all. Sunday morning and I'm falling I've got a feeling I don't want to know Early dawning, Sunday morning It's all the streets you crossed not so long ago.
