Knowing that Carnegie Hall also housed recording facilities that Benny Goodman had used to document his stand at the hall, Hammond recorded both concerts on acetate discs. In the 1950s, he had them transferred to magnetic tape, and by the end of that decade he struck a deal with Vanguard Records to release some of the performances as a two-record set. In 1987, this set was issued on compact disc. Now, some 60 years after the event, comes this sumptuous three-disc box set, From Spirituals to Swing: Carnegie Hall Concerts, 1938-1939 For the first time, all the known extant recordings.

June 3, 1938 - December 24, 1939. From Spirituals to Swing: Complete Legendary 1938-39 Carnegie Hall Concerts. The legendary FROM SPIRITUALS TO SWING concerts were organized by John Hammond, a producer and talent scout for Columbia records. Hammond wanted to represent black music of all kinds in a single concert. To that end, he brought together jazz giants like Lester Young and Count Basie with blues performers like Ida Cox and James P. Johnson (who had often accompanied Bessie Smith).

From Spirituals to Swing: Carnegie Concerts 38-39. John Hammond's Carnegie Hall concerts brought a new legitimacy to black music and broke new ground in racial integration. In many ways, these 1938 and 1939 Carnegie Hall concerts ushered in an exciting period of black music for the American public. While great bandleaders like Benny Goodman had been blurring the color line for years, From Spirituals to Swing was the first prominent Carnegie Hall production to present African American performers to an integrated audience.

The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert by Benny Goodman, Columbia Records catalogue item SL-160, is a two-disc LP of swing and jazz music recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938. First issued in 1950, the landmark recording captured the premiere performance given by a big band in the famed concert venue. The event has been described as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music.
