The Bolshoi Opera performance from 1991 found here is pretty good although marred by sometimes weak solo singing. I liked the work Aleksandr Arkhipov did in the title role of the evil sorcerer Kastchey. Andrey Chistyakov and the Bolshoi Opera Orchestra present the orchestral portion with character and a more precise, transparent sound than the competing recording from Valery Gergiev. Christyakov’s conducting is notable for its musicality, including nicely-donee transitions, such as the intensification at the beginning of tableau 2 and then again the potentially awkward transition into tableau 3, which is handled deftly.

By 1901 Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov had already been a professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory for thirty years and had achieved considerable renown as a composer. Having written eleven operas of varying subject matter, his interest in folklore led him to Yevgeny Petrovsky’s libretto – based on the tales of the evil genie Kashchey – which would become the topic of his next stage work.
