Kastchey the Immortal, Tableau One. (25:19). 1. The Princess and Katchey. 2. The Princess, Kastchey and the Storm Knight. 3. Kastchey's Arioso.
The Bolshoi Opera performance from 1991 found here is pretty good although marred by sometimes weak solo singing. I liked the work Aleksandr Arkhipov did in the title role of the evil sorcerer Kastchey. Andrey Chistyakov and the Bolshoi Opera Orchestra present the orchestral portion with character and a more precise, transparent sound than the competing recording from Valery Gergiev. Christyakov’s conducting is notable for its musicality, including nicely-donee transitions, such as the intensification at the beginning of tableau 2 and then again the potentially awkward transition into tableau 3, which is handled deftly.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Kashchey the Immortal - C. By 1901 Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov had already been a professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory for thirty years and had achieved considerable renown as a composer. Having written eleven operas of varying subject matter, his interest in folklore led him to Yevgeny Petrovsky’s libretto – based on the tales of the evil genie Kashchey – which would become the topic of his next stage work. Superb performance by Russian star soloists of the Bolshoi, veteran Andrey Chistiakov conducts the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra.

By 1901 Nikolai RimskyKorsakov had already been a professor at the St Petersburg Conservatory for thirty years and had achieved considerable renown as a composer. The opera is written on a small scale, with just five characters, and the realm of the supernatural is emphasised through artificial modes. Further musical characterisation can also be found in the chromaticism and altered harmonies given to Kashchey, and the heroic lyricism of Prince Ivan Korolovitch.
