A song cycle about hemp and its history, New Prohibition is the brainchild of Jonathan Stuart. It's based on his 1976 pro-pot play entitled Mary Jane, for which the majority of these tracks were written. Twenty-five years later, with hemp and pot still illegal, Stuart and noted producer/auteur Hal Willner rounded up a motley crew of vocalists including Dee Dee Ramone, Taj Mahal and the Fixx's Cy Curnin, as well as an unusual yet talented studio aggregation, to bring the play's soundtrack to life. How listenable it is, depends on how wide of a swath your musical scope encompasses. And even they may tune out due to the disc's rampant, often avant-garde diversity.
Dixieland music is an early style of jazz which developed in New Orleans at the start of the twentieth century, and spread to Chicago and New York City in the 1910s. Dixieland jazz combined brass band marches, French quadrilles, ragtime, and blues with polyphonic improvisation by trumpet (or cornet), trombone, and clarinet over a "rhythm section" of piano, guitar, banjo, drums, and double bass or tuba. Musical styles with important influence from Dixieland or traditional jazz include Swing music, some Rhythm & Blues and early Rock & Roll also show significant traditional jazz influence, Fats Domino being an example. The concert had social and cultural implications as white society began to explore music of black musicians with greater interest.
Throughout history, various methods of musical instrument classification have been used. The most commonly used system in use in the west today divides instruments into string instruments, woodwind instruments, brass instruments and percussion instruments, however other ones have been devised, and other cultures use varying methods. Western Classification. The system used in the west today, dividing instruments into wind (brass and woodwind), strings, and percussion, is of Greek origin (in the Hellenistic period, prominent proponents being Nicomachus and Porphyry). He was the curator of the musical instrument collection of the conservatoire in Brussels, and for the 1888 catalogue of the collection divided instruments into four groups: strings, winds, drums, and other percussion. This scheme was later taken up by Erich von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs who published an extensive new scheme for classication in Zeitschrift für Ethnologie in 1914.
