I am not very convinced by the logic of this compilation. However, while the McLachlan Prokofiev leaves one feeling that this is rather dull music, Colin Stone, with the help of a recording whose full-blooded presence puts the others in the box in the shade, but above all with the vitality and conviction of his playing, reveals them to be well worth knowing.

Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 8 in B♭ major, Op. 84 (1944) is a sonata for solo piano, the third of the Three War Sonatas. The sonata was first performed on 30 December 1944 in Moscow by Emil Gilels. Andante dolce (in B-flat major). Andante sognando (in D-flat major). Vivace (in B-flat major). The movement begins with a melancholy, and mysterious theme that wanders. The key is B♭ major but the sense of tonality is weak due to Prokofiev's frequent modulations to remote keys.
