Little Boots' debut album, then, is a mainstream pop effort with an indie-friendly narrative. It's a savvy approach, effectively bridging the gap between poptimism and alt snobbery. One ute nugget comes after another, with the directness of Madonna and the fashion sense, too: There's blog-house distortion, Italo-disco sweep, and the dayglo tranceyness of recent electronic-based pop-rap hits. The hooks, however, tend to be more Hard Candy than The Immaculate Collection. Hands' most distinguishing characteristic is an unusual level of meta-pop self-awareness. Kind of clever the first time: "Stuck on Repeat", produced by Hot Chip's Joe Goddard and co-written with Goddard and Kurstin, still throbs like a Kylie Minogue crush.

Little Boots: 'Hands'. This is a magnificent debut that satisfies the head, the heart and the feet. In fact, the first six cuts - all uptempo, all corkers - could make up the best opening to any album this year. Much of what follows is more subdued, but misty-eyed electro-ballads like 'No Brakes' and 'Tune Into My Heart' are just as melodic and well-crafted as the flashier tunes at the beginning. Winner of the increasingly influential BBC's Sound of 2009 poll in January, there will be those who will have been waiting for Little Boots' debut album while sharpening their knives. They will be disappointed. Because Hands is a project – and rarely has that word been so apt – whose aim is to create immaculate future-pop, while apparently giving nothing away whatsoever about its creator. For a DIY artist, Victoria Hesketh – Stylophone in one hand, Tenori-On in the other – is strangely absent from her songs.

Little Boots is scared stiff about releasing her debut. But she lives up to all the hype, says Alexis Petridis. This is not a state of mind apparent from Hands, which is, by anybody's standards, an enormously self-assured debut. The swagger of current single New in Town can be heard all over the album. It's in the charging commerciality of almost every chorus, and in the way Hesketh bends not merely a multitude of currently hip underground styles to her radio-friendly will (the most pronounced inspiration comes from the kind of "cosmic" early 80s Italian disco rediscovered by British DJs in recent years, but there's also dubstep-inspired bass and the unmistakable mark.
