No New York is a compilation album released in 1978 by record label Antilles under the curation of producer Brian Eno. Although it only contained songs by four different artists, it is considered by many to be the definitive single album documenting New York City's late-1970s no wave movement. Early in 1978, New York's Artists' Space hosted an underground rock festival with several local bands.

Theme from New York, New York by Frank Sinatra (1980). The city's unofficial anthem sees New York through the wide eyes of an outsider: a small-town striver hoping that "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. The song breathes aspiration, and is itself a fairly recent arrival: Broadway's John Kander and Fred Ebb wrote it for Liza Minnelli to sing in 1977's New York, New York (a film set in the '40s), and Frank Sinatra made it famous three years later. From an album that inspired a critical love-in came a video that starred Kermit the Frog, for a song that LCD Soundsystem chose to close its farewell show. Its charms are many; A downtempo, half-shrugged first verse turns into a punch-by-punch slugfest by the song's end-the perfect equivalent to any New Yorker's relationship with the city we love to hate and hate to love.

New York City is on the same level as Los Angeles, Detroit, San Francisco, and Nashville as far as cities that have produced a great deal of the talent you hear on the radio today.

New York City is in reality a collection of many neighbourhoods scattered among the city’s five boroughs-Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island-each exhibiting its own lifestyle. Moving from one city neighbourhood to the next may be like passing from one country to another. New York is the most populous and the most international city in the country. Its urban area extends into adjoining parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. For the past two centuries, New York has been the largest and wealthiest American city.

New York City encompasses five county-level administrative divisions called boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. All five boroughs are part of New York City, and each borough is coterminous with a respective county. The boroughs of Queens and The Bronx are concurrent with the counties of the same name, while the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island correspond to New York, Kings, and Richmond counties, respectively.
