Downtown" is a song composed by Tony Hatch which, as recorded by Petula Clark in 1964, became an international hit, reaching number one in Billboard Hot 100 and number two in UK Singles Chart. Hatch received the 1981 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. The song has been covered by many singers, including Dolly Parton, Emma Bunton and The Saw Doctors.

Downtown is an album by Petula Clark (her first album licensed to Warner Brothers Records) following the success of her single of the same title. The album's tracks were all produced, arranged and conducted by Tony Hatch and were recorded at the Pye Studios in Marble Arch with the session personnel including drummer Bobby Graham, guitarist Big Jim Sullivan and the Breakaways vocal group; the "Downtown" track included guitarists Vic Flick and Jimmy Page in addition to Sullivan.

Despite peaking lower than her UK comeback hit "Sailor", "Romeo" earned Clark her first Gold record by selling 400,000 units in the UK. In Ireland "Romeo" reached Jean Broussolle who had translated Clark's precedent hit "Sailor" rendered "Romeo" as "Roméo" which became Clark's first hit in France on 20 January 1962 - Clark's next two singles would also reach in France where overall she'd top the charts five times
Between the years 1955-1962 Petula Clark worked for the Nixa, Pye and Vogue record labels. In 2002, the people behind the Castle reissue label decided to assemble all of her singles dating from the last three years of that period and present them as "The Lost Album 1959-1962. Sailor" was Clark's first number one single. Romeo" sold a million units in 1961. These are not the best tracks on the album, but their numbers must have looked good on the books.

Petula Clark, CBE (born Sally Olwen Clark, 15 November 1932) is a British singer, actress and composer whose career spans eight decades. Clark's professional career began as an entertainer during World War II on BBC Radio. During the 1950s she started recording in French and having international success in both French and English, with such songs as "The Little Shoemaker", "Baby Lover", "With All My Heart" and "Prends Mon Cœur".
