Weiss, a crony of Tom Waits since the early '70s, has probably heard more than enough comparisons between his and Waits' music. It's nonetheless hard to avoid when describing Old Souls & Wolf Tickets, which has much in common with Waits' own fusions of hipster growl, blues, smoky after-hours jazz, and weird Americana. Just because it sound at times like a poor man's Waits, however, doesn't mean it isn't likable enough on its own terms.

Hardly surprising considering Old Souls & Wolf Tickets is only his third album in three decades. Considered royalty in Hollywood's less salubrious quarters, Weiss made his mark in LA during a long-term residency at the infamous Tropicana Motel along with Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. Waits wrote a song about Weiss's car. Jones went one better and immortalised him in "Chuck E's in Love". Willie Dixon recorded this nugget of Dixie-fried boogie-woogie in 1970 with "little" Chuck E Weiss providing backing vocals. It says a lot about big Chuck E's sensibilities that the rediscovered cut fits perfectly on this record. Beyond the nostalgia there's also a lot of fun. Who else is going to tell you about the 60-year-old Al Jolson's honeymoon or enthuse so passionately about his car?
check out ‘Old Souls & Wolf Tickets’. As a sort of shock therapy. A legendary LA hipster and mate-of-Tom-Waits, who opened The Viper Rooms with. Johnny Depp, Weiss trades in a mixture of blues, boogie-woogie, swamp jazz, silly voices and wordplay that will, frankly, do your head in. Not so much bad, as inexplicable, ‘Old Soul. features the sort of boozy, bluesy riffing and bizarre non-sequiturs – my baby’s got no clothes/ ‘cos she’s. cooking chicken soup – that have middle-class men in their 50’s rolling around. But, if there’s a blues lesson to be learned from Chuck E. Weiss it’s that most of. the great blues records were recorded on wax cylinders in 1922 by dirt-poor guitarists. who’d recently sold their souls to the devil. Not LA showmen peddling slick, silly electric blues to A-list crowds.
His next album after Extremely Cool, Old Souls and Wolf Tickets, was released in 2001. It was also produced by Gilkyson and is perhaps less reminiscent of Tom Waits and more redolent of Delta blues acts decades older. Down the Road a Piece," from Old Souls & Wolf Tickets, is a 1970 recording of the Weiss and Willie Dixon playing together. In 2006, Weiss released the album 23rd & Stout, an album more reminiscent of Waits's 1980s output, featuring an exploration of many blues and rumba styles, as well as a tribute to Sterling Holloway, entitled
