Ken Burns Jazz is the accompaniment to a film - the story as Burns tells it. In Burns' 10-part telling, the first nine episodes run through 1961, with the last summarizing the music since. This decision is a clear point of controversy, especially for those whose ears are more attuned to recordings of the '60s and beyond. Burns firmly contends that he is a historian, that he's telling a story of the inspiration behind the development of jazz. Those taking Burns' project overall as a manifesto - that jazz stopped decades ago - are overreacting or misinterpreting

1. Star Dust - 78rpm Version - Louis Armstrong. You look like someone who appreciates good music.

Fats Waller is missing. So are Jon Hendricks, Stan Kenton, Eddie Jefferson, Lennie Tristano, Randy Weston, Eddie Harris, and Lester Bowie. Burns stays with the mainstream of jazz in America. He traces its development into the 1960s. After that, much is left to the listener to determine which directions jazz has taken. The Best Of Ken Burns Jazz by Jim Santella. Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of America's Music. In conjunction with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns' ten-part 2000 PBS special, Columbia/Legacy and Verve teamed up to issue a special series of reissues covering much of the history of 20th century jazz. The central release of this program is the five-CD box set Ken Burns Jazz: The Story of America's Music, its 94 selections covering the history of 20th century jazz, from 1917 to the mid-'90s. Chronologically, the set is very skewed toward the first 50 years of that time span; there is only just under a CD's worth of music dating from after the mid-'60s.

2000 - Ken Burns Jazz- The Definitive Benny Goodman. 01 - Waitin' for Katie. 03 - It's Tight Like That. 05 - Royal Garden Blues. 06 - King Porter Stomp. 04 - Speak Like A Child. 05 - Tell Me A Bedtime Story. 09 - You've Got It Bad Girl.
