I don't mean to dwell But I can't help myself When I feel the vibe And taste a memory Of a time in life When years seemed to stand still. I close my eyes And sink within myself Relive the gift of precious memories In need of a fix called innocence. When did it begin? The change to come was undetectable The open wounds expose the importance of Our innocence A high that can never be bought or sold. Symbolic acts, so vivid Yet at the same time Were invisible

There’s really no way to put it into words, you just have to listen to it. But it sounds more human, more real. The copious hype surrounding Death's album "Symbolic" is well earned, and this piece of music is worth every word of praise heaped upon it. It is perfect, and that isn't a stretch at all. Chuck Schuldiner, the creative genius behind death metals best (absolute best, most consistent and innovative) group is a bit of a perfectionist, and its clear on this album.

Since their first full length album Scream Bloody Gore they had made a big impression on the metal world and helped pioneer the now famous Florida death metal scene. Their earlier material was all about brutality (as you can probably tell from the song titles), speed, and sheer aggression. While the songs are still heavy, the band has lightened up on the song subjects and slightly on the guitar riffing. Musically, the band has reached a higher level of technicality and musical proficiency. I will discuss all of this later on.

New entry on the Indie LPs chart, NME 8 April 1995.

Hey guys, I read everywhere that the Remaster LPs sound bad. Which versions should I buy regarding sound? greeting
SlingFire
The Columbia House CD pressing uses the exact same master as the original Canadian CD (with matrix runout: #9503051 RR8957-2 MFG BY CINRAM), which has a dynamic range of DR11 instead of DR8.
Uleran
Excellent version of the album if you're looking for symbolic on vinyl. Excellent sound quality and the white 180 gram vinyl is gorgeous. Nice center labels on the vinyl itself too. :) m/ RIP Chuck gone but not 4gotten.
Togor
This sounds pretty fucking solid. Also, the black is listed as 180g, but this white one Also feels like 180g. It's pretty heavy/solid. Not sure if the black had a hype sticker that said 180g, but the white seems to also be 180. Also, mine has a plain white inner sleeve w/ anti-static plastic, and a separate printed insert w pictures and lyrics.
Hulore
Same here. Just listened to mine. Great sound! Just saw it is limited to 1500 copies on metallum. I'm keeping mine in the inner sleeve it came in, since it is not just paper.
Negal
I got the same and do agree with the heavier quality of the vinyl - 160 or 180g. Sounds fantastic.
Weetont
I just got my copy brand new and sealed in the mail yesterday. It is the 180 gram White vinyl and wow this thing sounds amazing! So far it's the best of the Death vinyl reissues I have (I own every Death album on vinyl except for "Scream Bloody Gore" which is now the only remaining album to complete the collection). Whoever is responsible for the master of this pressing did a great job, I don't know who is responsible because on the back of the album jacket it shows at least 3 companies involved in this release which are Metal Blade, Roadrunner, and Rhino. I always loved the production of this album by Jim Morris and thought it to be quite possibly the best sounding album in Death's catalogue, but this vinyl pressing makes it sound even better than I knew of it before. Well done!
Iesha
000000H66X6 - RR 8957-2 (1995) is non-remaster. Loose and tight violent middle.
Inertedub
Purchased the metal-blade vinyl reissue, sounds great! I was lucky to find it for an affordable price, wish I could say the same for the Human / ITP albums, which are rare as hens teeth on vinyl.
Kefrannan
DR11 high dynamic range pressing, audiophiles should seek this version (the vinyl is similar).
Monam
It has an Attic Records logo on the back of the case
Ffleg
I have the CD with this exact code (RR 8957-2) bought in the EU and mine has DR8 (except last song DR10) - how can I recognize the canadian release?
Fearlessdweller
Great sounding release (apparently identical to the 2007 release which means it should be DR12), nice thick record, nice lyrics / notes insert. The inner sleeve is also one of those paper ones with the inner plastic layer, which is certainly better than the all-paper throwaway crap you get with most reissues. And, of course, the music itself is fantastic; one of Death's best.My only complaint is that there is some very mild pixelation on the front cover, though you have to look at the record up close to notice it, it won't be visible while on display on your shelf for example. It is only the actual painting portion of the artwork, though. The Death logo and the "Symbolic" text are perfectly sharp and high res. The same is the case on the back cover, all the text is sharp but the artwork is pixelated, but substantially worse on this side since it's just a portion of the front cover, rotated. Not at all a deal-breaker to me, but if you're particularly anal about these sorts of things then this might be one you'd want to avoid.

I just bought the metal blade pressing. I have had the cargo one since release and it has slightly better printing on the cover. I noticed the pixelation right away but still it isn't bad.
Iaiastta
Are either of the 2014 Metal Blade reissues(black or white) pressed on 180 gm. vinyl like the 2007 Roadrunner/Cargo press?
Urreur
Thank you for responding to my inquiry. I had heard that this was an awesome reissue with a very nice Dynamic Range level, I'm super excited to hear this version now! "Symbolic" is already one of my all time favorite albums ever and I just can't wait to be able to hear a high quality version of it. My brand new copy is out for delivery from postal service today so I should be getting mine in the next couple hours!
Sha
Sound quality is excellent, clear, open and detailed. It's the only Death reissue I'd recommend. Not a fan of the Relapse reissues, too much compression, the originals sound better.
Vudomuro
How would you personally rate the sound quality of this version? Any help would be greatly appreciated since this is one of my favorite albums and one of the only DEATH albums that I do not yet own on vinyl and it's being sold at a very reasonable price so I would very much like to know how they rate compared to the Relapse reissue DEATH vinyls that I own. Thank you!
Kaim
I have the black version, disc feels like a 180gm, it's heavy.
Shadowbourne
My copy is from the first pressing of this 2007 reissue, the sound is very good to my ears but I think the original vinyl pressing is without doubts better but it is too much expensive, mostly nowadays (the vinyl trend is high in this moment).
Modred
Did this release actually come with a printed inner sleeve? My copy has one of those plastic inside of paper sleeves, and an insert that I know was on a printed inner sleeve that came with a different reissue.
generation of new
Mine has a generic white paper inner sleeve and a separated insert with pictures of the band, some words from the members of the band and the lyrics on the other side.
Brialelis
An insert and an inner sleeve aren't the same thing, you know that, don't you?
ALAN
I just got mine in the mail today and yeah it's got a printed inner sleeve with lyrics, band members, etc. I was a little worried this wouldn't sound so good because I've heard a lot of people say that you should often just get the original pressing for death metal albums... however, this sounds fantastic.
Jonariara
what a genre-defining work, DEATH metal at its best. RIP Chuck - you rule!
Global Progression
Single LP, regular (non-gatefold) jacket. Kind of disappointing especially for the price but it does sound pretty amazing.
Najinn
Problem regarding this vinyl is not about sound. My copy is with damaged vinyl. And more important information - quality of the vinyl is like cr00p. Some songs I have been listened for less than 5 times. And vinyl is with cracking, sounds used. I bought it new shrink-wrapped.
Camper
Yeah, volume issues are a direct result of squishing too much detail onto 1 disc. It also results in less bass and dynamics. This album is 50:37 minutes long....really should've been a 2LP release. How does the sound quality compare to the CD??
Yananoc
Is your copy as quiet as mine? The record sounds pristine, easily one of the best I've come across, but it's kinda odd that they crammed 27 minutes of music on one side, makes it pretty low volume in my case.
Uaha
as anyone any feedback on this repress. does it sound good ? I know some represses are not that good sometimes. cheers !
Rolling Flipper
Agree. Volume is a bit too low, but if your speakers can handle the amplifier volume knob beyond 11-12 o' clock..it sounds heavenly!
Kiutondyl
ahah, bought it and it seems you're right ! volume is low, but the sound is neat and crushing ! amazing repress for an amazing album !thanks for your feedback !
Ndyardin
The volume is very low. Mainly because a lot of music has been crammed into each side. However if your amp+speaker is capable of reproducing clear music even at high volumes, then it's going to be a treat listening to this reissue!
Ynye
I preordered this from Relapse in October. It says it came out on the 24th, still no shipping confirmation or even any change in the order status (still says processing preorder). Has this actually come out or not?
Fordrellador
Is it supposed to come with a printed inner sleeve? Mine just came with one of those sleeves that's plastic inside paper.
melody of you
Hi, same for me, I e-mailed Relapse (last week) who told me that they didn't receive the Symbolic LPs yet. They'll ship as soon as they got it
Varshav
This just came into my local store this week, so maybe yours will ship soon? Here's hoping, just spun mine last night and it's killer.

In my opinion, when it comes to Death, I find that Symbolic (album) is the only album to ever come close to the Human (album)-- scratch that. It's by far my favourite album from Death. I never thought anything would surpass Human, but then Symbolic showed up. :) I found Scream Bloody Gore (album) and Individual Thought Patterns (album) to be disappointing, really. While there were a few tracks I loved (and still love), the albums in general were disappointing to me. But, with tracks such as: Zero Tolerance, Empty Words and Sacred Serenity, Symbolic really brought Death 'back'. Chuck's great grunting ability and extremely progressive yet melodic guitar-play really make this album come alive. Death used session musicians during the production of Symbolic, and I must say they did a great job. My rating for this album? 4.5+ out of 5

"I found Scream Bloody Gore (album) ... to be disappointing" - How can that album be disappointing in 1987, when it was Death's first album and before it there were just demos and all the tracks from those early tapes ended up on Scream Bloody Gore, only with better production???
Vital Beast
''I found Scream Bloody Gore (album) and Individual Thought Patterns (album) to be disappointing, really.'' After that, I stopped reading, I stopped taking your review seriously. Of course your review is somewhat 7 years ago, not sure if you have the same opinion to this day. Cheers!
Gir
I tend to agree with basically all your points. ITP is Death's zenith.
Shakanos
I have to disagree. Individual Thought Patterns is arguably my favourite Death album (maybe a tie with Human). ITP was the pinnacle of musicianship in my opinion. It was a very different album at the time (Cynic's Focus came out 3-4 months after ITP, Atheist's sense of jazz-infusion was a little different). Lots of raw energy and willingness to explore new areas. ITP was quite a drastic change from Human. Definitely Chuck's songwriting improved on Symbolic, but i find ITP to be very refreshing. Maybe it was the jazziness, bass was extra clear; i don't know. Symbolic sounds a tad more polished to me (don't get me wrong. i love Symbolic too).
