God in 3 Persons was The Residents' first recording project which was designed from the beginning for CD. An LP album has to have a natural break in the middle of the music, with a strong beginning and ending for each side.

God in Three Persons is a rock opera/concept album by The Residents, released in 1988. It is about a man-arbitrarily named 'Mr. X'-who befriends two conjoined twins. The songs are all sung in a rhythmic spoken word fashion, similar to talking blues. The entire lyrical content of the album is written in trochaic octameter, a rare poetic meter most famously used in Edgar Allen Poe's poem The Raven.

The story involves a sinister would-be svengali named Mr. X acting as the narrator, who encounters a pair of conjoined twins who have healing powers. Mr. X becomes their manager and falls in love with the female twin, then schemes to separate the two of them so he can have her for himself. The first Residents project recorded for the Compact Disc in mind, the first after Snakefinger’s death, the first to be published by a mainstream label (RykoDisc), and the last project to be recorded on analog tape

CDs, which play straight through from beginning to end without a break, allow for a different organizational form, since works are only limited by the 74-minute total playing time. The God in Three Persons project was conceived of as "potato chips" - meant to come out in a variety of flavors. Four versions were created: the album, a soundtrack version without the narration, and two singles, all of which were to be released about a month apart, each giving a different perspective on the music. It turned out, however, that demand for the various versions wasn't high.
