The Rentals - Lost in alphaville album
After such a convoluted process, there was a good chance the record would sound overcooked and stale. Far from it, Lost in Alphaville is a huge-sounding modern indie rock album with a glossy sheen on the surface, but all kinds of heart beating just below. Carney's drums power things ahead like a locomotive, Slegr's guitars provide just the right amount of crunch, and Sharp's well-placed vintage synths are perfect candy-coating on top.
His first proper Rentals album in 15 years, which features Black Keys’ Patrick Carney on drums, is a welcome return for those who were drawn to Weezer for their winsome underdog charm. Featured Tracks: Play Track. Thought of Sound" - The Rentals Via SoundCloud. Rock bands inevitably get old and start to suck, but Weezer are an exceptional case of this. Once again, Lost in Alphaville reveals Sharp’s strengths as a casting director: moonlighting Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney lends the retooled Rentals some heretofore unrealized heft, while Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of honky-tonk harmony outfit Lucius capably provide the oohs and ahhs once supplied by everyone from that dog’s Rachel and Petra Haden to a pre- SNL Maya Rudolph.

The rest of Lost in Alphaville follows The Rentals formula and if you were a fan before you will like this record. I especially enjoy that there is no retreat back to the 90’s on this album. It has a very modern silkiness to it and benefits from the mixing of D. Sardy (Jay-Z, LCD Soundsystem). I hope Sharp stays with The Rentals because the direction found here on Lost in Alphaville is perfect and I would gladly tune in again. Key Tracks: Damaris, Stardust, 1000 Seasons. Ex-Weezer bassist Matt Sharp has played silly buggers with his inspired alt-synth solo project The Rentals ever since roping in Damon Albarn, Tim Wheeler and Miki Berenyi from Lush to guest on their majestic second album ‘Seven More Minutes’ in 1999. Lengthy splits, a solo album and a year-long audiovisual art project called ‘Songs About Time’ have delayed the LP, but it’s a worthy comeback.
Lost in Alphaville is the third full-length studio album by The Rentals, released on August 25, 2014, through Polyvinyl Records. 1 Background and recording.
