Pennsylvania indie rock quartet The Districts gained plenty of buzz for their 2013 debut

A Flourish and a Spoil by The Districts, released 10 February 2015 1. 4th and Roebling 2. Peaches 3. Chlorine 4. Hounds 5. Sing the Song 6. Suburban Smell 7. Bold 8. Heavy Begs 9. Young Blood 10. 6 AM Whether they’re tearing it up in a basement, rocking a festival crowd or hard at work in a studio, The Districts are a band that exists in the moment. The Pennsylvania four-piece channels its long-forged bonds into visceral, explosive rock and roll. You’ll hear hints of Americana, moments of the blues and folk, but written into songs so expressive that those labels are transcended  .

A Flourish and a Spoil's best moments sound refined instead of confined, and still leave plenty of room for their buildups and breakdowns. They expand on their endearingly scruffy rock on "Peaches" and "4th and Roebling," which has a rough-and-tumble jangle that echoes the New York-based bands of the early 2000s (making the title's reference to a Brooklyn intersection all the more apt)

A great album that deserves a little more recognition. Just give a listen to Young Blood if you want to get a feel for it, or if you like The Strokes it should be right up your alley. The pressing is quite decent with medium to low surface noise with just a few pops that Im sure are just static from my copy. The album is distorted sounding by stylistic choice, specifically in the vocals and the sound is tailored perfectly to blend with that style while still keeping it detailed and clear in the soundstage. The mids are thankfully present as well but the bottom end bass seems a little too thinned out to my liking.

A Flourish and a Spoil is far from a sophomore slump; instead, it's a portrait of the Districts as they evolve from their freewheeling beginning. For every one of the album's fumbled subtleties, there are several moments when The Districts feint at being great. Enough to show they’re flailing in the right direction.

A great album that deserves a little more recognition. Just give a listen to Young Blood if you want to get a feel for it, or if you like The Strokes it should be right up your alley. As a not so popular band its normal to assume sub par production for the least available format but here we get a taste of that sweet quality we tend to lack these days. The pressing is quite decent with medium to low surface noise with just a few pops that Im sure are just static from my copy. The cut is done with enough dynamics and clarity which is great for 45 minutes of this kind of music on just one record. Its not overly bright and edgy either, like most sub par produced modern music on records which is probably helped by Calbis mixing and mastering work, no unpleasant sibilant vocals or instruments. The album is distorted sounding by stylistic choice, specifically in the vocals and the sound is tailored perfectly to blend with that style while still keeping it detailed and clear in the soundstage. The mids are thankfully present as well but the bottom end bass seems a little too thinned out to my liking. That is about the only aspect I can think of to critisize the product on because I do love great bass in music. If this was a 2x record set it would easily have killed it with a perfect score Im sure but while there is room for improvement I wish that more modern records sounded like this one.Equipment used:Rega RP1 with Nagaoka MP-110 cartridgeCyrus 2 AmplifierSystem Fidelity SF5030 tower speakers Custom made HQ speaker cables
